Communiqué from LIAC following the meeting of 23-24 March 2009

LIAC Commissioners met in Auckland at the University of Auckland Library in March 2009. The Commissioners met with the Minister Responsible for the National Library Hon Dr Richard Worth on Monday 23 March. Over the course of the two-day meeting the Commissioners discussed the topics outlined below.

National Library of New Zealand Building Redevelopment
LIAC supports the redevelopment of the National Library of New Zealand building in Wellington. LIAC believe that it is important to ensure that the current problems with the building are fixed. This requires considerable expenditure. Therefore it would be a lost opportunity not to make the building viable for the next 50 years and blend both digital services and real services to reflect the future of New Zealand.

Alternative Funding Frameworks for Documentary Heritage
LIAC discussed a documentary heritage report on new opportunities for the protection and enhancement of public space. LIAC will continue to explore alternative funding frameworks for documentary heritage. This topic will remain on the agenda.

Copyright Issues
LIAC supports the repeal of section 92A of the Copyright Amendment Act. Fair use and a wider review of copyright law must be considered in the future. LIAC will maintain an interest in copyright issues.

Public Libraries Legislation
LIAC Commissioners had a discussion around options for public libraries legislation. They believe that it is important to amend the Local Government Act to include legislation for libraries.

LIAC Strategic Directions 2009-2010
LIAC has developed their Strategic Directions for 2009-2010.  The document outlines the Key Strategic Areas and work programme for the year which focuses on trusted public space advocacy; support for New Zealand’s social, cultural and economic digital transformation and Mÿtauranga Mÿori - Mÿtauranga ÿ Iwi – a leading indigenous knowledge practice.

The next LIAC meeting is 25 June.
